Bessey & Sohn, a German family-owned company, was founded in 1889.

Internationally recognized as a world-class steel maker, the company first introduced their line of malleable cast iron bar clamps in 1936 and heat-treated, all steel clamps in 1952.

Bessey has grown to be the largest clamp manufacturer in the world, distributing some 1300 different clamping tools in 90 countries worldwide.

Bessey cutting technologies represent a tradition in the manufacture of tin snips going back more than 70 years.

Whether it be on TV woodshop programs, at woodworking trade shows or in woodshops across the nation, serious hobbyists and professionals alike have told us the K Body is their favorite woodworking clamp.

Bessey started producing the original sliding-arm bar clamp in 1936 when it obtained a patent on a new type of malleable cast-iron clamp...the rest, as they say, "is history" as Bessey continues to be the world leader in quality and innovation in hand clamping technology.

Bessey is changing the way the industry thinks about clamping. In late 1998, James Morton approached the engineering school of a major Canadian university to evaluate and compare the speed of their all-steel, sliding-arm clamp with the conventional C-clamp.

The Legendary Bessey Steel Sliding Arm Clamp

Bessey created the original sliding-arm bar clamp in 1936. Continuous improvement in our clamp designs have led to several patents and ensure that no other clamp manufacturer can match the quality and features built into our hand clamping products. Our heat-treated sliding arm clamp helped revolutionize the way people think about clamping.

The main feature of sliding-arm clamps is their speed of operation since the arm travels along a rail to the pressure point and eliminates the time-consuming rotation of a "C" clamp's spindle. The clamp user simply slides the arm into position and tightens the spindle. Aside from the obvious timesavings, the design also removes the bulk of the clamping pressure from the spindle and virtually eliminates a significant risk of clamping - spindle failure.

Our heat-treated sliding arm clamps are available with openings from 6" to 60" and feature roll-formed, high-carbon Acme threads that resist weld spatter... eliminating the need for soft copper coatings. Detailed clamp specifications are available here.

The Tradesmen Woodworking Bar Clamp

The original Bessey clamp design is unmistakable with its unique non-slip locking mechanism... always look for the set screw to make sure it's a Bessey Tradesmen, the reliable workhorse that woodworkers around the world depend on when clamping is serious business.

Our Tradesmen Bar clamps are available with nominal openings from 4" to 98". Our medium duty bar clamps providing nominal pressures up to 1100 pounds are suitable for most woodworking applications. Heavy-duty clamps are also available. Click here for detailed product specifications as well as an image gallery showing these great woodworking clamps in operation.

Popular Woodworking says: "We’ve had Bessey Tradesmen bar clamps hanging on the ends of our wood-working benches for more than eight years. We don’t think about them much because they’re always handy and always do exactly what we ask..." (more)

K Body Wood Working Clamp

The Bessey K Body is the original parallel wood-working clamp, designed for woodworkers who depend on accurate clamping every time they use it, year after year. The Bessey K Body is for woodworkers who believe "almost" parallel is just not good enough.

Look closely at the workings of a K Body. You will see hardened steel, locking set screws, steel guide rollers and steel anchor pins... (more)

About Bessey... the world's largest clamp manufacturer

Bessey's woodworking, steel, and welding clamps are designed and engineered from the ground up by people whose single focus is clamps. Bessey uses its own steel mills to process the highest quality steel available in a clamp to guarantee that every clamp is worthy of the Bessey name.

Because Bessey is ISO 9001 certified and controls every aspect of the manufacturing process we have a defective return rate of less than 0.003%! Bessey’s continued commitment to research and development has helped make Bessey the largest clamp manufacturer in the world and earned the reputation of being the "undisputed leader in hand clamping technology."
